The Illumination Archive is a long-running motion design project on YouTube exploring science fiction and fantasy universes through fully animated explainer videos.

Combining principles from motion graphics, interface design, and educational storytelling, each video is designed to present complex fictional systems in a clear, structured, and engaging format.

Started in 2018, the Illumination Archive began as an exploration of how motion design could be used to communicate complex ideas within fictional universes. It was inspired by the clarity and accessibility of educational media and applies those same techniques to fictional worlds by using animation, visual language, and narration to break down lore, factions, technologies, and more.

The initial concept was to create animated “wiki-style” breakdowns transforming dense lore into structured, visual explanations. Over time, this evolved into a more refined system combining flat animation, interface design, and narrative pacing, where each video is built not just as a standalone piece, but as part of a broader visual language designed to scale across multiple worlds.
Each video follows a structured pipeline combining research, design, and animation into a cohesive output
Assets are created with clarity and reuse in mind, allowing complex topics to be broken down into readable, modular components representing characters, environments, vehicles, and more across multiple universes.
Each fictional universe is assigned its own visual identity with bespoke colour palette, typography, and tone, while a consistent channel-level visual identity is applied across all videos through logo, typography, and motion. The intro, outro, and interface elements establish a recognisable frame, allowing each video to feel connected while still adapting to its specific subject matter.
Aside from the very first, all videos have been voiced by Karli Walker, whose delivery plays a key role in shaping the tone of the project and plays a major role in translating complex ideas into an accessible and engaging format.
